The High Road to Islay

Onward to Islay! After an early rise (jet lag again!) from Lisa, Sarah & myself, we packed our bags into the newly rented Volvo and made our way out of Edinburgh by way of the Forth Rail Bridge.

We were scheduled to get onto the ferry to Islay at 1pm, but an unfortunate event with the GPS sent us several hours in the wrong direction. It turns out that sometimes the most direct route isn’t necessarily the best, as we found ourselves being politely instructed to turn right in 300 yards, and drive straight into the River Clyde.

It turns out that this set back was really a blessing in disguise - as it meant that we now had much more time to explore the beautiful Highlands. This also meant me seeing proper snow for the first time (Falls Creek doesn’t count) - which as you can see in the photo, I was incredibly excited about!

We eventually arrived on time for the next ferry, which would take off just after sunset. 3 hours later, we docked at Port Askaig and drove through the dark to our hotel at the Bowmore Distillery.
