With the wedding season fast wrapping up, it’s just about that time of year where I kick off the dress shoes and slip into something a bit more comfortable.
In off seasons of recent years, I've spent my down time in more tropical climates, like Bali and Thailand. The days would consist mostly of me lounging around by an outrageously large pool, only getting up for a massage or to fetch another cocktail. A rough life, to be sure - but somebody has to do it.
This year things are going to be a little different. I’m still heading to Bali for two weeks in August, however this time will be for work. August is an awfully long time to wait for some time away though, so I’ve slotted something else in a little earlier…
That’s right, I’m buggering off to New Zealand. I’ve booked a camper van for the entire duration, kicking the trip off in Auckland and wrapping up in Christchurch. That gives me a whole month to take in as much of the country as I possibly can. Naturally that will mostly involve recreating scenes from “The Lord of the Rings”, but my main objective is to see as much of NZ’s natural beauty as possible.
I’m also using this as a bit of an opportunity to reconnect with some parts of photography that I’ve let go by the wayside in recent years. It’s been a while since I’ve used my camera for anything other than work, so I’m looking forward to taking my time to create an image again (in no way is that a complaint - I love the shit out of my job).
As it stands right now, the trip itself has absolutely no structure. It’s my hope that this will lead me to take the road less travelled wherever possible, or to stick around somewhere that tickles me just right. With that said though, if you’re in New Zealand at the same time - give me a shout!
